Drainage can almost always be added to an existing landscape. The work involves excavation along problem areas, which disturbs portions of the existing landscape, but we plan the work to minimize impact and restore disturbed areas. The exception is when a hardscape is failing because of underlying drainage issues - in that case, the hardscape often needs to come up to address the problem properly.

Yes. Most residential drainage work doesn't require permits, but larger projects, shoreline work, and any work that connects to municipal storm sewers does. Aspen handles permit research and application as part of the project, including DNR coordination for shoreline projects.

Clay doesn't absorb water - it sheds it. Most of the western Twin Cities sits on heavy clay or clay-loam soils, which means surface drainage carries more importance and subsurface drainage requires more careful design (proper aggregate bedding, longer pipe runs, well-designed outlets). Drainage that works fine in sandy soil will fail in clay. Our drainage design accounts for the specific soil conditions on your site.

Aspen warrants the workmanship of drainage installations for 24 months from completion, covering construction defects and improper installation. The warranty doesn't cover drainage performance that exceeds the system's designed capacity (unusual storm events, changes in upstream conditions). Drain tile is designed to a specified capacity - the warranty covers proper installation to that specification.
